Beyond Health Insurance Gaps

Financial support when an accident changes everything

Health insurance pays for treatment. It does not usually replace income if an accident leaves you unable to work for a while, or for good. Personal accident insurance pays a benefit on accidental death or disability, and some plans offer an income benefit during recovery. A Distroo Advisor helps you check which benefits you actually need.

Claim Guidance

How a Personal Accident Claim Works

A clear process helps when an accident happens. Here is how a claim usually works, and where your Advisor helps. The insurer decides the claim.

Step 01

Inform the Insurer

Inform the insurer and your Advisor as soon as possible, within the time stated in the policy.

Step 02

Documents

Submit the FIR or panchnama copy, where applicable, and the treating doctor's reports and disability assessment.

Step 03

Disability Assessment

The insurer assesses the extent of disability against the policy's benefit schedule, often based on a medical certificate.

Step 04

Claim Decision

The insurer decides whether the claim is admissible under the policy and the benefit payable.

Step 05

Payment

If the claim is admitted, the benefit is paid by bank transfer to the insured or the nominee.

Policy Add-Ons

Optional Benefits and Add-Ons

Basic accidental death cover can be extended with disability and income benefits. Each has its own terms, limits and cost.

Family Support

Child Education Benefit

Some plans add a benefit towards the education of dependent children after an accidental death or disability.

Fracture Care

Some plans pay a fixed amount for specified fractures or a daily amount during hospitalisation after an accident.

Emergency Transport

Ambulance and Evacuation

Some plans cover ambulance or emergency evacuation after an accident, within limits.

Frequently Asked Questions on Personal Accident Cover

Answers about disability benefits, occupation classes and claims.

Term insurance pays on death. If an accident leaves you disabled but alive, a term plan usually pays nothing unless it carries a disability rider. Personal accident cover can pay a benefit for disability and, with some plans, for temporary loss of income.
Insurers group occupations by accident risk. In general, Class I covers office-based work, Class II covers work that involves regular travel or field activity, and Class III covers more hazardous work such as heavy machinery. Premium and eligibility can vary by class.
If a doctor certifies that an accident has left you unable to work for a period, some plans pay a weekly amount, up to a limit and number of weeks stated in the policy. Check the limit and any waiting period.
Many personal accident policies cover accidents worldwide, but the territory is stated in the policy. Check it, along with how claims are settled for events abroad.
An FIR or panchnama is usually required for road, rail or public-place accidents and for fatal accidents. For minor injuries, the insurer may accept medical records. Check your policy and the insurer's requirements.
